The
most common pre-employment screening searches conducted by corporations
are criminal background checks, financial searches, and credential verification,
due to both the importance and implication of the acquired information.
There are additional searches that also provide valuable insight into
the credibility of an applicant.
Canadian Criminal
Background Checks
What is a criminal background check?
A canadian criminal background check will provide you with a detailed
report of past criminal convictions for all provinces and territories
in Canada.
Why is this information
important?
The Canadian criminal background check will provide insight into the applicant's
involvement with substance abuse, potential for aggressive and threatening
behaviour and involvement with theft, mischief, property damage and/or
fraud.
Example:
An applicant was party to 5 charges of committing an Indecent Act. One
of those events occurred in the workplace.
Financial Position
What is a financial position search?
A financial position search will determine the applicant's historical
financial status and identify registered accounts, external collections,
and expose bankruptcy, Judgments, or alternate legal proceedings against
the applicant.
Why is this search
important?
This is an important facet of pre-employment screening if the applicant
will be employed in a position of trust or financial responsibility. It
also alludes to an applicant's character.
Example:
Investigation revealed an applicant was a severe financial risk, in addition
to being the proprietor of a small business in direct competition with
the company to which he was applying.
Credential
Verification
What is credential verification?
Credential verification will confirm the validity of university degrees,
college diplomas, certificates of apprenticeship and all regulated licensing.
Why is credential
verification necessary?
Find out if your applicant has the qualifications and training necessary
to fulfill the requirements of the position. Credential verification will
also provide insight into your applicant's character, in particular their
honesty and trustworthyness.
Example:
We determined that an applicant presented a potential employer with a
fraudulent university diploma, and in fact was not qualified for the posted
teaching position.
Media Search
What is a media search?
Research the applicant's outside business interests, and active participation
in organized events through national newspaper databases and Internet
resources, including identifying the applicant as author of postings in
any Usenet discussion groups.
Why is a media search
relevant?
An applicant may have an interest in a competing business, could be posting
inappropriate comments, or disclosing proprietary information about a
current or past employer(s)
Example:
We obtained evidence that an applicant was soliciting specific information
from on-line discussion groups in order to extort from his current employer.
